"Jam Filled Sliced Thumbprints" are the easy version of the popular favorite "Jam Thumbprint" cookies but baked in logs and then sliced.

These cookies are shaped into long logs, filled with your favorite flavored jams, baked, cooled, and sliced. They have the same great-tasting results, but they are super simple to make and require less fuss and time!

The cookies have a fantastic aroma while baking, and it's hard to resist not eating them all before cooling to dust them with a snowy powdered sugar topping.

Our jam-filled-shaped similar to a biscotti are a pretty addition to enhance your Christmas Holiday cookie tray delicious in flavor but is a soft tender cookie.

Steps for Making Easy Jam-Filled Sliced Logs

  1. cream the butter and sugar together
  2. add the egg and vanilla
  3. slowly blend in the flour and baking powder
  4. shape into logs
  5. fill and bake
  6. cool completely before slicing

The recipe only makes a small batch of 30 cookies so make a double batch!

Other Fillings and Cookie Ideas

  1. lemon, mint, rum, anise, almond, orange, maple, or another extract you like in place of vanilla
  2. fill the center with Nutella
  3. add toffee chips, mini chocolate chips, and coconut to the center
  4. jam and peanut butter
  5. peanut butter and chocolate chips
  6. minced maraschino cherries and coconut, chopped walnuts, and mini chocolate chips
  7. coconut shredded with red and green chopped candied cherries
  8. caramels chopped, pecans, and coconut
  9. pistachios, macadamia nuts, pecan, walnuts, or for nut allergies pumpkin seeds or sunflower seeds mixed with cinnamon and sugar 
  10. whole cloves in the center
  11. zest from lemon or oranges added to the dough lemon curd filling
  12. chopped dried fruits
  13. minced cranberries, dates, figs, or raisins with cinnamon /sugar mixed with nuts
  14. cherry, lemon curd, peach, apricot, blackberry, mint, fig, blueberry, strawberry, pineapple jams, preserves or any thick fruit compotes

Tips

  1. measure exactly
  2. always use a cooled cookie sheet for the second batch
  3. make sure the butter is at room temperature and do not microwave
  4. always preheat the oven and bake on parchment paper
  5. cookies can be brushed with an egg wash for a shiny top before baking
  6. make a powdered sugar and water icing instead of powdered sugar on top
  7. use floured  hands to form the logs
  8. make a deep well in the center with floured fingers

Jam Filled Sliced Logs

A quick version and soft buttery cookie filled with jam in the center that is a super easy version of the popular Thumbprints but easier in a log form!
Prep time: 10 MinCook time: 20 MinTotal time: 30 Min

Ingredients

  • 2/3 cup sugar
  • 8 tablespoons of butter softened
  • 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 3/4 cups flour
  • 3 tablespoons of cornstarch
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 cup or more if needed any preserves, we prefer red raspberry, blackberry or strawberry

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 375 degrees and line two baking sheets with parchment paper.
  2. In a large mixing bowl cream together the butter and sugar until light.
  3. Add in the egg then beat for 1 minute.
  4. Stir in the salt and vanilla.
  5. Add the flour and baking powder by hand and just stir until blended evenly.
  6. Form two mounds on the parchment paper that resemble logs with a spatula.
  7. With heavily floured hands shape the sides to a uniform shape then down the center of each make an indent well with flour fingers.
  8. Fill each middle of the log with any flavor of jam preferred. (I usually overfill mine).
  9. Bake at 375 degrees until the edges are browned and the top is set and dull on top.
  10. These take around 18 to 20 minutes to bake.
  11. Cool completely.
  12. Sliced with a smooth sharp knife into biscotti-style logs.
  13. Sprinkle with powdered sugar or make a powdered sugar and water-thin icing to drizzle on top.
  14. Store in an airtight container.
  15. Cookies will freeze perfectly for up to 4 months in between layers of parchment paper.
