Step By Step Tomato Jam and Topping Spread
- Slice Tomatoes: Buy firm ripe plum tomatoes cut them in quarters then pulse them in the food processor leaving large pieces, smooth and put through a food mill if you want seedless jam
- Stovetop: In a deep saucepan you will need to saute the garlic in oil first, then simmer the tomatoes, masking the chunks down
- Note: If you would prefer a spicy jam add some jalapenos or long hots chopped up. The last step is to simmer until the tomatoes thicken around 1 hour and 30 minutes.
- Garnish is Optional: Top with fresh basil leaves if desired
- Tip: store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks or freeze it in airtight containers for up to 3 months.

Ingredients
- 2 pounds of Roma (plum tomatoes)
- 3/4 cup of light brown sugar
- 1/4 cup lemon juice freshly squeezed
- 1 1/2 teaspoon salt
- pepper to taste
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes or more to taste
- 2 teaspoons minced fresh garlic
- 1/2 teaspoon granulated garlic powder
- 1/2 teaspoon ground cumin
- Optional: 1 tablespoon finely chopped long hot peppers, chilies or jalapeno peppers
Instructions
- Tomato Jam Topping Recipe:
- Place the tomatoes in a food processor and pulse until desired chunkiness.
- To remove seeds you will need to put the tomatoes through a food mill, otherwise, just continue to the recipe below.
- In a deep heavy-duty saucepan, add all the ingredients on low heat.
- Simmer until the tomatoes thicken, this takes around 1 hour and stir the contents every 15 minutes to ensure nothing is sticking to the bottom.
- Simmering can take up to 1 hour or longer.
- When the tomatoes are done they should look glossy, coat the spoon and not a lot of liquid left, turn off the heat, and cool.
- Add to mason jars stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 months or stored in the freezer-safe container2 for up to 3 months.
- Note: this makes 2 cups of tomato jam.
- Alternative: Roasted Tomato Jam: roast sliced plum tomatoes for 25 minutes in a preheated oven of 400 degrees on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet. Proceed to simmer for less time until thickened with all ingredients.
