Growing up I was really never a huge fan of cabbage but this sweet buttery smokey taste was always so flavorful after one bite I learned to love this vegetable.
Buttered cabbage and ham can be a great addition to any buffet table during the holiday or summer picnic, so it's the perfect economical take along when hosting or invitations to a party.

Simple to Find Ingredients for Buttered Cabbage in a Slow Cooker
- ham cubed pre-cooked, chopped
- small head of green or purple cabbage sliced, cored, and any thick vein parts removed
- water or chicken broth (or more if needed)
- butter melted and cooled to room temperature
- salt and pepper to taste
- dried oregano, chopped fresh Italian parsley, fresh basil leaves granulated garlic
- This can easily be done on the stovetop or even baked if you don't own a slow cooker, just simmer it in a Dutch oven and keep adding broth until the cabbage is cooked to your liking in a covered pot.

- add canned beans to the slow cooker
- flavor the broth with ham, smoked pork chops, pork bone from the shoulder, thick sliced bacon, kielbasa, or other sausage like bratwurst, hotdogs, smoked turkey, or cooked rotisserie chicken
- for a spicy broth add cayenne pepper
- any other vegetables can be added to the slow cooker while cooking, carrots, celery, cubed potatoes, tomatoes, onions, or whatever else you like, and all vegetarian
- Note: all root vegetables should be sliced thinly to cook properly or canned and are soft added to the last 30 minutes of cooking

Slow Cooker Buttered Cabbage and Ham
Buttered cabbage with ham made in a slow cooker. This recipe also has variations and substitutions.

Ingredients
- 3 cups of ham cubed pre-cooked, chopped
- 1 - small head of green or purple cabbage sliced, cored, and any thick vein parts removed
- 2 cups of water or chicken broth (or more if needed)
- 1- stick of butter melted and cooled to room temperature
- salt and pepper to taste
- 1 teaspoon dried oregano
- 2 tablespoons chopped fresh Italian parsley
- 1 or 2 fresh basil leaves
- 1- 1/2 teaspoons of granulated garlic
Instructions
- Prepare your slow cooker liner by spraying it with butter-flavored cooking oil.
- Cut up the cabbage removing the inner core and thick veins in the leaves, then slice it into thin pieces.
- Add all the ingredients with the cabbage to the slow cooker.
- Stir the cabbage mixture to coat evenly.
- Set the slow cooker to high for 5 to 6 hours
- Note: Add more broth or water if too much liquid evaporates and the cabbage isn't cooked all the way (around 1/4 cup).
