No Bake Cookies

No Bake Cookies have acquired several names over the years, we grew up calling them boiled cookies.

This retro 1950s cookie is still popular today in many kitchens and uses plain and simple ingredients.

The cookies have been referred to as Preacher Cookies, Oatmeal Fudgies, Chocolate Boiled Drop Cookies, No Bake Chocolate Peanut Butter Cookies, and around 50 more names evolved through the ages of time, whatever you want to call they remain popular and delicious.

This is a good recipe handed down by my mom's scribbling on a piece of paper, we still make them every holiday, a little sweet snack that brings back those great memories of her in the kitchen.

Please read the tips before making them as easy as they as some mishaps happened over the years, scroll to the recipe card and hit print to avoid ad intrusions.

Other Cereal to Use is always a Question

I have tried a few other cereals before and cornflakes along with flat-style cereals do the best although I would recommend sticking with oatmeal.

The oatmeal can absorb the liquids better and if using a different cereal really only tasted great the first day.

I also recommend just adding the colorful sprinkles on top and not any mix-ins with this mixture.

You can experiment with whatever you like however, I always come back to the tried and true no-bake cookie.

No Bake Cookies

A 1950s retro no-bake cookie that is still popular through the ages. Chocolate, Peanut Butter, and Oatmeal. A cookie made in less than 30 minutes.
Prep time: 5 MinCook time: 1 MinInactive time: 2 HourTotal time: 2 H & 6 M

Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1 - 3/4 cups sugar
  • 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2/3 cup creamy peanut butter
  • 3 cups quick oats (I have also used old fashioned oats with success)

Instructions

  1. Prepare two large baking sheets with parchment paper and set them aside.
  2. In a non-stick medium-sized saucepan, add butter, sugar, cocoa, and milk.
  3. Place the heat on medium, and cook stirring until it begins to have a rapid boil.
  4. The second step is to let this mixture boil without stirring at a rapid boil for 1 full minute so set your timer.
  5. Remove from the stovetop burner, and immediately add in vanilla, peanut butter, and quick oats.
  6. Stir the mixture to combine evenly, then by using a cookie scoop (or two tablespoons) drop the mounds onto the lined baking sheets.
  7. These are set up quickly in the refrigerator or let them set out on the counter for a few hours.
  8. Place in an airtight container and in a cool place. They will stay fresh up to 3 days if they last that long!
  9. Tip: this mixture must boil for exactly 1 minute. If you boil it too long they will be dry and crumbly. If you don't boil it long enough it stays wet and not set up.
