Over the years many new flavors were adapted to this fine coffee liquor and you can find so many uses for it.
We love it to use as an extract in candies, cakes, cookies and so much more.
It even is great drizzled over vanilla ice cream.
This homemade batch is made with just 4 ingredients and can last up to 3 years plus it cost a whole lot less to make at home.
Save those old cordial bottles and make a batch today or get some pretty decanters to store this in.

What is Kahlua?
Kahlua is a brand of coffee-flavored liqueur that was founded around 1936 in Mexico and continues to be a popularly consumed alcohol.
The liqueur is made by combining arabica coffee with sugar, vanilla, and rum, and is used in classic cocktails and I will provide two recipes.
White Russians and Mudslides are the two most popular recipes using this coffee-flavored liqueur.
I have used this homemade Kahlua in cocktails, a cup of cocoa or coffee, in cream flavors, candy making, favorite chocolate sauces, and several famous desserts like Tiramisu.
It's also perfect just served in a rocks glass over ice.
Coffee Alcohol Invented in Mexico
Born and bred in Mexico, Kahlua came about thanks to a partnership between businessman Señor Blanco and the Alvarez brothers coffee producers.
Blanco’s rum and the brothers’ coffee first got together in the 1930s, with alterations later coming from chemist Montalvo Lara.
The original recipe contains sugar cane rum, arabica coffee, vanilla bean, and caramel.
Tips:
- Bring to a boil and lower the temperature carefully watch the sugar mixture doesn't boil over
- Set the timer for 10 minutes
- Cool completely before adding liquor and vanilla
- Make sure you have a funnel for pouring
- Decorative bottles or any used clean bottles with a cap are a must-have to store this in
- This can be used in any recipe calling for coffee flavoring or liqueur including ice cream
Ingredients You Will Need
- strong freshly brewed coffee (I use espresso)
- sugar
- pure vanilla
- white rum or vodka any kind ( I use inexpensive kinds of alcohol and rum is preferred)
Tools You Will Need
- 3-quart saucepan
- large stirring spoon
- funnel
- decorative bottles with a cap or use old alcohol clean decanters
- measuring cups and spoons

Yield: 4 cups
Homemade Kahlua
This is a coffee liqueur that can be used in mixed drinks, desserts, cookies, candy recipes and so much more. Made in minutes with just 4 ingredients
Prep time: 25 MCook time: 10 MTotal time: 35 M
Ingredients:
- This recipe can be doubled:
- 2 cups strong freshly brewed coffee (I use espresso)
- 2 cups of sugar
- Do not add ingredients below until after the above is completely cooled.
- Read all instructions before proceeding
- 1 1/2 tablespoons pure vanilla
- 2 cups white rum or vodka any kind ( I use inexpensive kinds)
Instructions:
- Making Kahlua:
- Place the sugar and freshly brewed coffee into a deep saucepan.
- Bring the sugar and coffee to a boil, then lower to simmer watching carefully for no-spill overs.
- Stir occasionally to ensure the sugar is melted. Set the timer to 10 minutes for simmering.
- Cool completely.
- Add the white rum or vodka.
- Using a funnel, pour carefully into decorative glass bottles with a cap that has a seal or mason jars.
- Store in a cool dry place at room temperature.
- Note: The Kahlua will keep fresh for around three to four years. Kahlua that has gone bad has a watered-down taste and a different smell than normal. Should you experience either sign toss it.
