Copycat Bourbon Chicken

This mall food copycat bourbon chicken is a favorite every time we visit the food court.

Maybe you've tried it and loved it, but haven't thought of making it at home?

This version homemade without all the additives is 100 times better, and you're in for a treat!

With all the different fast food places, it's the one meal that everyone wants here in our home.

This flavorful cubed chicken is perfect over just plain white rice, stir-fried rice or coconut rice.

The bourbon really makes this Asian chicken deliciously prepared in no time, it's so simple.

The best part about this, it's homemade without that MSG that gives everyone problems.

Wholesome ingredients that are worry-free from things you can't pronounce and perfect every time with hardly any cooking skills needed.

We love Asian flavors and make a delicious Pineapple Teriyaki Salmon, and another favorite is slow cooker beef broccoli that's also so good!

What is Bourbon Chicken?

Bourbon chicken is a dish named after Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana and for the bourbon whiskey ingredient.

The dish is commonly found at Cajun-themed and Chinese restaurants.

The recipe includes soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger, and bourbon whiskey in the base, and has a coating of this delicious sauce.

Some recipes need marinating, my easy recipe doesn't use that step and comes out perfect!

The Chicken

Sauteed the chicken on both sides quickly on medium-high heat adding the seasoning.

You can add fresh garlic and grated ginger if you have it, otherwise dried is what I have on hand and make this often on a whim.

If we want this kind of meal, I prefer to have ingredients on hand that will make this recipe in a pinch!

I have substituted chicken breasts, boneless of course and cubed.

The thighs are always a juicer part of the chicken and preferred as the copycat recipe shows you will find used in the mall food.

When we went to the mall, this was lunch at any Asian establishment. After reading all the preservatives in it, I decided to make it at home and healthier. This copycat recipe is spot on if you love Bourbon Chicken in the mall!

ingredients:

  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 2  pounds boneless skinless chicken thighs
  • 1  teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2  teaspoon granulated garlic powder
  • 1/4  teaspoon black pepper
  • 1/3  cup soy sauce
  • 1/3  cup Bourbon or use apple juice
  • 1/2  cup water
  • 1 tablespoon rice vinegar (found in the Asian section of your supermarkets)
  • 1/2  cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 1 tablespoon of cornstarch mixed in 3 tablespoons of cold water
  • Optional: Toasted sesame seeds for garnish and cayenne pepper to taste for a little heat
  • Serving suggestion: cooked white fluffy rice, stir-fried or coconut rice

instructions:

How to cook Copycat Bourbon Chicken

  1. Cut the chicken thighs into 1-inch pieces.
  2. In a small bowl combine the ginger, pepper, soy sauce, bourbon,  water, garlic, vinegar, and brown sugar and cayenne pepper if using.  Set aside.
  3. Heat a large frying pan and saute pan the chicken in oil and the juices are clear around 2 or 3 minutes stirring frequently.
  4. Add the bourbon mixture.
  5. Boil the liquid and simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes to let the alcohol cook-off.
  6. The last step is to thicken, add the cornstarch and stir vigorously until it thickens.
  7. We love the sesame seeds, however, they are just a garnish and not usually used on the mall food, that's another favorite dish Sesame Chicken.
  8. Serve over fluffy hot cooked white plain rice, stir-fried rice, vegetable medleys or coconut rice.
