What is Bourbon Chicken?
Bourbon chicken is a dish named after Bourbon Street in New Orleans, Louisiana and for the bourbon whiskey ingredient.
The dish is commonly found at Cajun-themed and Chinese restaurants.
The recipe includes soy sauce, brown sugar, ginger, and bourbon whiskey in the base, and has a coating of this delicious sauce.
Some recipes need marinating, my easy recipe doesn't use that step and comes out perfect!
Ingredients Needed for Bourbon Chicken
- olive oil
- boneless skinless chicken thighs
- ground ginger
- granulated garlic powder
- black pepper
- soy sauce
- Bourbon or use apple juice if you prefer over alcohol
- rice vinegar (found in the Asian section of your supermarkets)
- brown sugar, firmly packed
- cornstarch mixed in 3 tablespoons of cold water
- Optional: Toasted sesame seeds for garnish and cayenne pepper to taste for a little heat
Suggestions Side Dishes:
- White Rice
- Stir-Fried Rice
- Coconut Rice
- Vegetable Medleys
- Steamed Broccoli
- Cooked Sweet Potatoes
- ramen noodles cooked
Tips
- Substitute apple juice for bourbon for no alcohol
- Use any parts of the chicken boneless if you don't like the thigh meat
- Add 1 tablespoon hoisin sauce for a different flavor
- Sprinkle with sesame seeds for garnish
- Add cayenne pepper for heat
- Hot peppers can be added when sauteeing the chicken
- You can substitute white vinegar for rice vinegar
- This chicken can be done in an instant pot sear first then add the rest of ingredients and put on slow cooker mode for 4 hours on high
The Chicken
Sauteed the chicken on both sides quickly on medium-high heat adding the seasoning.
You can add fresh garlic and grated ginger if you have it, otherwise dried is what I have on hand and make this often on a whim.
If we want this kind of meal, I prefer to have ingredients on hand that will make this recipe in a pinch!
I have substituted chicken breasts, boneless of course and cubed.
The thighs are always a juicer part of the chicken and preferred as the copycat recipe shows you will find used in the mall food.

instructions:
How to cook Copycat Bourbon Chicken
- Cut the chicken thighs into 1-inch pieces.
- In a small bowl combine the ginger, pepper, soy sauce, bourbon, water, garlic, vinegar, and brown sugar and cayenne pepper if using. Set aside.
- Heat a large frying pan and saute pan the chicken in oil and the juices are clear around 2 or 3 minutes stirring frequently.
- Add the bourbon mixture.
- Boil the liquid and simmer uncovered for about 15 minutes to let the alcohol cook-off.
- The last step is to thicken, add the cornstarch and stir vigorously until it thickens.
- We love the sesame seeds, however, they are just a garnish and not usually used on the mall food, that's another favorite dish Sesame Chicken.
- Serve over fluffy hot cooked white plain rice, stir-fried rice, vegetable medleys or coconut rice.
