We have also done this with any kind of squash, carrots, fruits or vegetables that are easy to cut and I will also give you some tips on the harder ones to cut!
Carving Fruits and Vegetables for Holiday
What a fun family project this can be for any holiday not just Halloween if you're an artist and creative.
For softer vegetables and younger children just use a plastic knife, they work great on softer fruits like ripe pears and tomatoes
They can be dressed up with fancy greens and even added to a pretty salad with carved-out pieces of cheese.
Tips and Topping Suggestions
- Easy to Carve Vegetables and Fruits:
- tomatoes, pears, peaches, eggplant, peppers,
- Tips for Carving Harder Vegetable:
- When using potatoes, squash, or harder vegetables IE butternut, pumpkin, microwave them for 5 minutes, cool completely then carve them
- Use soft cheese and carve faces
- Apple carves out nicely but you must dip them in lemon juice to prevent browning as well as white potatoes and pears
- meat can be carved and molded into shapes and baked like a pumpkin head meatloaf, deli meats, thicker brats, or sausages
- after carving tomatoes, peppers they can be stuffed with chicken salad, egg salad, ham salad, or baked with your favorite filling. Hamburger with tomato sauce and cheese is a favorite
- Desserts also can be cut into shapes using soft angel food or cupcakes
- Extra-large marshmallows

Here is a fun project for kids and young at heart carving out vegetables for the holiday. Perfect when children are picky eaters.
Ingredients
- Refer to the notes for other ideas:
- Sweet potatoes
- paring knife
- Romaine lettuce
- Melted Butter
- Cinnamon and sugar mixture
- Cutting board
- Slice the potato top and bottom to be flat.
Instructions
- Cut a round hole on the top center to add green leafy lettuce for the top.
- Microwave the potato for 2 minutes to soften.
- Cool slightly.
- Crave the potato as you would a pumpkin using triangular shapes for eyes nose and mouth.
- You can make them scary or cute. (draw your design on there first with the edge of your knife.)
- Place on the plate.
- Brush with butter laying it down and sprinkle it with cinnamon sugar.
- Continuing baking, or microwave until the potato is cooked all the way through.
