Italian Loose Meat Submarine Sandwiches

These are a favorite Italian Loose Meat Submarine Sandwich on toasted hoagie garlic bread smothered in a tasty pizza sauce and topped with melted cheese.

The filling has Italian sausage and ground beef in a delicious quick Italian sauce and an economical fun meal everyone will enjoy.

The pizza sauce can be canned, jarred, or a homemade pizza sauce you prefer.

These submarines are loaded with meat and cheese and will satisfy a hungry crowd.

Step-by-Step Italian Loose Meat Submarine Sandwiches

  1. Saute the garlic and peppers in oil with the meat and drain some of the fat out
  2. add the sauce and all ingredients
  3. simmer for around 15 minutes
  4. toast the rolls with cheese and garlic powder
  5. spoon meat on the rolls add more cheese and broil until the cheese melts

Slow Cooker Method

  1. Saute the peppers, and garlic in a pan with oil
  2. Dump everything raw into the slow cooker with the sauce
  3. Slow Cooker on high for 4 hours or low for around 6

  • extra-virgin olive oil
  • lean ground beef
  • loose Italian mild sausage
  • salt and freshly ground black pepper
  • bell pepper chopped into small pieces
  • garlic, minced
  • kitchen bouquet, gravy master or Worcestershire sauce
  • pizza sauce
  • dried oregano
  • dried basil
  • Pecorino Romano cheese
  • provolone
  • finely chopped fresh basil
  • garlic bread: thick Italian bread, extra virgin olive oil, butter, 
  • to taste: add more if you like of grated Pecorino Romano cheese, fresh parsley, granulated garlic powder,, dried oregano or more to taste dried basil or more to taste salt, and freshly ground black pepper

If you would like to use all beef or all sausage, adapt away, this is just a guideline of how we prefer ours plus you can omit the peppers and add mushrooms and onions if you like, or all three!

Italian Loose Meat Submarine Sandwiches

Simmered pizza sauce with sausage and ground beef loose meat added to toasted garlic bread topped with melted cheese.

Ingredients

  • 3 cloves finely minced garlic
  • 1 medium green bell pepper seeded and thinly sliced
  • 3 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 1 pound Italian sausage mild or hot
  • 2 tablespoon kitchen bouquet or gravy master ( you can also use Worcestershire sauce)
  • 1 16-ounce jar of pizza sauce or use your favorite sauce jarred or homemade sauce
  • 1 teaspoon of each dried basil, parsley, and oregano
  • 2 teaspoons granulated garlic powder
  • salt and black pepper to taste
  • 16 (or more depending on how much cheese you like) slices of provolone
  • 10 Submarine rolls split buttered, toasted, and sprinkled with garlic powder and a tablespoon of Pecorino Romano cheese
  • Garnish: with fresh minced basil or parsley and drizzle with olive oil on top.
  • Options: substitute mushrooms for peppers or if you would like a real spicy sauce use long hot peppers.

Instructions

  1. In a small frying pan, add the oil and saute the garlic and peppers for 2 minutes then add the meat and keep stirring until the pink is gone.
  2. Drain the oil out a little.
  3. Add all ingredients including the sauce, seasoning, salt, and pepper to taste, and simmer for 15 to 20 minutes on medium heat.
  4. In the meantime toast the number of rolls you need for your family add the cheese on each side with grated cheese also.
  5. Spoon loose meat on one side, and top with another slice of cheese on top of the meat.
  6. Broil on high just until the cheese melts.
  7. Garnish with fresh minced basil or parsley, and drizzle with olive oil and sprinkle with red pepper flakes.
  8. Slow Cooker Method:
  9. Saute the garlic and peppers for 2 to 3 minutes.
  10. Dump everything into a slow cooker with raw meat (except for the cheese and submarine bread) and stir the sauce mixture until combined.
  11. Slow cook on high for 4 hours or low for 6 or until the meat is tender.
  12. Stir this occasionally.
  13. When ready to serve toast the submarine sandwiches and pile them onto the toasted bread then add a cheese slice on top and broil until the cheese melts.
