  1. 1 tablespoon white vinegar (or lemon juice)
  2. 1 cup milk
  • Directions:
  • Pour the tablespoon of vinegar into a glass quart measuring cup.
  • Fill the rest of the 1 cup glass measuring cup with milk.
  • Gently stir and let the mixture sit for about 5 minutes.
  • This will allow the milk to curdle and give it the characteristics needed.
  • Also, you can substitute, or substitute plain yogurt for buttermilk




Homemade Baking Mix (if you don't find a baking mix):

  • 3 cups of flour
  • 3 teaspoons of baking powder 
  • 1/2 teaspoon of salt

Homemade Kitchen Pantry Substitutions

Here is a roundup on how to make your own homemade kitchen staples for the pantry economically. Ingredients:

  • How To Make Kitchen Hack Homemade  Recipes:
  • Mayo
  • Pancake Syrup
  • Instant Oatmeal
  • Powdered sugar
  • Seasoning Mixes
  • Homemade Buttermilk

Instructions:

  1. Homemade Pumpkin Spice: 3 tablespoons cinnamon, 2 teaspoons ground ginger, 2 teaspoons nutmeg, 1/ 1/2 teaspoons each cloves and allspice. Add to a jar, cover and shake. I use baby food jars cleaned or small mason jars.
  2. Make Your Own Powdered sugar: Just pour 1 cup of granulated sugar in your blender or food processor, and pulse until the sugar gets superfine and fluffy. Sift it before using it to make sure you don’t have any large chunks of sugar left.
  3. Seasoning mixes: Blend all dried herbs and seasonings you like in a bowl and mix it together. IE, rosemary, dill, basil, oregano, parsley, thyme, sage, garlic powder, salt, pepper, cayenne, etc. in a bowl and store in old saved herbs jars or mason jars.
  4. Instant Oatmeal Packets: 10 cups quick oats, divided, 2 teaspoons salt, 1 - 1/2 cups brown sugar ( add more later if you like, 1 cup non-dairy creamer, optional 3 teaspoons cinnamon. Save 7 cups in a bowl. Put the other 3 cups in a blender, pulse to a powder. Mix with all ingredients. Save in 1/2 each in small storage bags. Proceed with the same instant oatmeal directions for 1 to 2 minutes in a bowl using 3/4 cup water with the mix. Makes 24.
  5. Pancake syrup: Add 1 cup water, 1 cup white sugar,1 cup brown sugar, boil in a small saucepan, simmer until sugar dissolves. Add 1/2 teaspoon maple flavoring.
  6. Homemade Mayo: Add the first 4 ingredients to a blender, 2 egg yolks, 2 teaspoons of white wine vinegar, 1/2 teaspoon Dijon mustard, 1/4 tsp kosher salt. Slowly pour in 3/4 cup light olive oil. Whip until it thickens how you like it. Store in glass jars in the fridge.
