Air Fried Hand or Turnovers
These were love at first bite!
Seriously the store-bought or homemade pastry crust came out flaky, not dry and perfect, the best part, is they're not greasy one bit like the ones from fast food places!
I love the fresh apple filling in these, however, I have tried so many other flavors and you can use canned pie filling to save time too!
You can drizzle a little powdered sugar and water frosting on top or leave it plain,
Make it round, or like a turnover, easy and so versatile.
Ingredients You Will Need To Make Air Fried Hand Pies

- Pie Dough Homemade or store-bought
- Canned Pie Fillings or Fresh Fruits
- Optional: silicone mats or air fryer liners to catch any drippings for easy cleanup
Filling Suggestions for Air Fried Hand Pies
- Fresh fruits, apples, peaches, pears, raspberries, blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries
- Marshmallows and chocolate
- P & J
- Nutella
- Canned Pie filling of any kind
- Pastry filling like almond solo
- Pastry Cream homemade filling chocolate or vanilla
- Taco filling use your favorite filling
- Hot Pocket fillings pepperoni and mozzarella, tomato sauce
- Banana Smores filling using bananas, chocolate and marshmallows in the crust
Tool You Will Need
- Air Fryer
- Fork
- Mixing bowls
- Pastry blender
- Aluminum foil
- If making homemade dough, rolling pin, cutting board

No Air Fryer, No Problem Bake or Fried HandPies
- Stovetop Fried: Add up 4 inches of vegetable oil or canola oil in a dutch oven and preheat the oil to 375 degrees. Place two hand pies in the hot oil and fry for 2 minutes then flip and fry for 2 more minutes or until golden brown. Drain on a paper towel.
- Baked Hand Pies: preheat the oven to 400 degrees. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper. Place the pies on the baking sheet. Bake for 30 to 35 minutes until the pies are golden brown.
Tips For Air Fried Hand Pies
- Brush the top with melted butter or heavy cream.
- You can sprinkle the top of the dough with cinnamon and sugar, plain sugar or leave it plain.
- After the hand pies are cooked cool at least 10 minutes before trying to eat them the filling is very hot.
- Pierce the dough on top before air frying for hot air to escape while cooking.
- Lastly, you can make powdered sugar and water icing and drizzle that over the top instead of sugar before the baking method.
- Use any kind of cookie cutters to make themed shaped hand pies
- If you have a toaster oven long-style air fryer you can also use an oil-sprayed broiler pan they come with instead of air fryer liners

These are pies made in an air fryer. The recipe is using fresh or canned pie filling and homemade or store-bought pie crust. Either way, you can make a fabulous tasting pie without the oil and grease in 14 minutes. These can be made into small or one large hand pie.
Ingredients
- Crust (make it homemade or use store-bought frozen or refrigerated pie dough)
- 2 cups flour
- 1/2 teaspoons salt
- 2/3 cup shortening
- 4 1/2 tablespoons ice water
- Mix together flour with shortening cut into the flour using a fork or pastry blender. Add the ice water mixing until the dough forms a ball.
- Roll out a rounded dough on a floured board. This makes two 9 inch crusts.
- Filling for Fresh Fruit or use any kind of canned pie filling:
- 3 small diced and peeled apples or use 2 cups of chopped other fruits, whole berries, etc.
- 2 tablespoons flour
- 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
- 1 tablespoon melted butter
- 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
- Mix the fresh fruits with the above ingredients in a bowl and set aside.
- Note: if using pie filling you will need approximately 1 cup of filling for a 9 inch round hand pie, only use two tablespoons for smaller hand pies.
- Oil spray
- Aluminum Foil
- Optional Topping Before Baking the Pies:
- heavy cream
- sugar or cinnamon and sugar
Instructions
- Pastry Crust:
- Roll out either 4-inch rounds for a small hand pie or 1- 9 inch round for making one large hand pie (shown in all photos).
- Make all and any hand pies on aluminum foil that is oil sprayed.
- Place 2 tablespoons of the prepared filling in the small hand pies, fold the circle over and crimp the edges with a fork and pinch making the dough crimped with your fingers.
- If making one large 9-inch pie add the filling to the middle (fresh or canned fruits of choice) fold over like a half-moon, crimp and seal edges with fork or fingers and proceed the same for air frying below.
- You can brush the top with heavy cream or milk and sprinkle the top with sugar before air frying.
- Pierce the top of the dough on hand pies with a fork randomly for heat to escape the pie while cooking.
- Note: These can also be baked at 400 degrees for 35 minutes or until browned.
- Air Fryer instructions:
- Place the hand pies on an oil-sprayed piece of aluminum foil and air fry at 400 degrees for 14 minutes, checking to see if they are browned, continue to air fry checking every minute if they aren't browned at the 14 minutes mark.
- Let cool for 10 minutes before eating they are very hot inside.
- These are perfect as-is for serving or you can add powdered sugar and water glaze.
- They are great served with vanilla ice cream.
