Upstate NY Feast Sausage and Peppers

My favorite time of the year in Upstate NY is when the Italian Feasts would start, usually July -September. They have them at Mt. Carmel in Utica, St. Anthony's in Utica, Sons of Italy just to name of few of my childhood home town favorites as a child. We use to be able to walk to St Agnes Church feast, long since gone now.

Upstate New York Italian Feasts

Here is one of the must haves at any Italian feast in Utica, New York.

The smell of sausage and peppers cooking at the feast is mouth watering.

I make my own Italian sub rolls, Italian homemade sausage and now lucky enough to grow my own peppers here in Florida all year long.

Our St. Anthony Candle

Saint Anthony was our lucky Saint to pray too

The local Upstate New York folks know when we lose something, we pray to St. Anthony.

Mom taught us that when you lose something, our prayer goes like this, "somethings lost and can't be found dear St. Anthony come around".

I know what you're thinking, but it works! Everytime we prayer to St. Anthony, we find what was lost!

St. Anthony Church candle people come from all over in bus loads to line up for their pizza fritta, which is fried homemade pizza dough.

The Best Memories!

The sausage and peppers, pizza fritta, tomato pie and roasted chickpeas are just a few of the fabulous feast treats! Located in Utica, NY. back in the 1970's.

Sausage and Peppers is one of the must haves at any Italian feast.

Homemade sausage is the best.

But where I grew up there were many places that made the best Italian sausage that made this delicious sandwiches so popular.

We also love sausage and peppers with mozzarella melted over our submarine sandwich with Sunday Traditional Sauce.

Childhood Memories

Even thought I don't live in Utica anymore, I make this dish all the time.

It reminds me of my childhood, growing up.

We would go every year to these feasts and Dad would get his beer and sausage and pepper sandwich.

I wasn't a big fan then, as I grew up, those feasts were a tradition and treasured memories.

I love making homemade sausage and peppers now all year long.

If you love sausage and Italian food don't miss this one!

I know if you're from Upstate New York you can appreciate the sentiment of this post.

The sausage, peppers and homemade breads along with summer cookouts, were just part of a wonderful tradition there all summer long.

The food is made with love.

All the churches that have those feasts are fabulous, and sausage and peppers is just one of those memories you never forget.

UPSTATE NY FEAST STYLE SAUSAGE AND PEPPERS

prep time: 15 minscook time: 45 minstotal time: 60 mins
This is a Utica New York Feast memory of delicious foods. Sausage and Peppers was a must have there.

ingredients:

2 tablespoons olive oil
1 large onion, halved and sliced (for me these are optional)
6 large Italianelle sweet or hot red peppers, seeded and sliced
2 garlic cloves, minced
salt and pepper, to taste
1 pinch crushed red pepper flakes (optional)

instructions:

Heat the oil in a large pan, over medium heat.

Add the sausages and cook, turning frequently.  You want them browned all over and this takes about 10 minutes.  Add the onions if using and stir up the browned bits on the bottom of the pan.  Then after another 2 minutes, add the peppers, garlic, salt, pepper.  After lowering the heat cook for another 5-10 minutes until the vegetables are tender and the sausages are cooked through.

Split open the sub roll, add your sausage and top with peppers, garlic or onions.

Addtional Options: Top with  Traditional Sunday Sauce or store bought marinara, mozzarella cheese, grating cheese and broil until cheese is browned and bubbling.

Toast your sub roll with butter and garlic powder for a garlicky buttery roll.

Top with fried mushrooms in addition to your peppers added while frying.

You can add whatever you like in spices, oregano, basil, parsley for an herb flavored sausage sandwich.
