Sausage Spinach and Cheese Stromboli

Sausage Spinach and Cheese Stromboli is a delicious pizza roll stuffed with cooked sausage and spinach and loaded with melted mozzarella cheese.

Although the combinations are endless and anything can be added to stuff a pizza dough this one is a family favorite.

Homemade pizza dough or store-bought can be used for busy weeknights, and the fillings can be made ahead of time and just assembled when ready to bake with a rising time of 30 minutes after stuffing it and serve with homemade marinara.

Stromboli Steps to Make One

  1. Make the pizza dough or buy your favorite Italian-style pizza dough and preheat the oven to 400 degrees.
  2. Choose any filling you prefer this one is filled with sauteed loose mild Italian sausage and sauteed fresh spinach with lots of mozzarella cheese
  3. Fill, roll like a jelly roll, seam side down on a deep baking sheet, and let it rise for around 30 minutes
  4. Bake until golden brown ( we brush the top with olive oil and sprinkle with sesame seeds which is just an option

Sausage Spinach and Cheese Stromboli

Pizza dough stuffed with spinach, sausage and loaded with mozzarella cheese equals a fantastic all-in-one sandwich called stromboli

Ingredients

  • 1 pound of sauteed loose Italian mild sausage
  • 1 - 8 ounce bag of fresh spinach
  • 3 tablespoons olive oil
  • 1 cup of whole milk mozzarella shredded or more
  • 1 Italian pizza dough around 1 pound homemade (or use an Italian store-bought)
  • Optional: olive oil to brush the top of the dough then sprinkle with sesame seeds or brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with granulated garlic powder and dried oregano after rolled up and before baking,  Sprinkle the top with Parmesan or Romano grated cheese, chopped fresh basil after brushing with olive oil before baking.

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 400 degrees and line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  2. Heat a frying pan with the olive oil and saute the sausage.
  3. Cook the sausage until all the pink is gone.
  4. Add the spinach until wilted
  5. Drain any juice.
  6. Cool the filling completely
  7. Roll the dough out around 1/2 thick then add the filling and cheese then roll up like a jelly roll.
  8. Place seam side down.
  9. Brush with olive oil and sesame seeds.
  10. Bake in the preheated oven at 400 degrees until the top is golden brown around 35 minutes or more.
  11. Serve with a fresh marinara sauce to dip this in!
