Homemade Flatbread

Homemade Flatbread is one of my favorite yeast-risen doughs for sandwiches, quick pizzas and so much more.

The easy part of making these flatbreads (perfect pillows of fluffy bread) is they can be cooked quickly either on a grill or stovetop gridded cast iron pan.

I have used an electric gridded grill, and waffle maker and made them on the stovetop and we have all these directions in the post below.

If you love pizza these flatbread rounds are the perfect pizza for a quick lunch or meal for one person in a pinch.

They are even perfect for making a panini and yes you can use the panini maker to cook the flatbread.

Step-by-Step Pizza Homemade Flatbread:

  1. dissolve the yeast with a pinch of sugar
  2. beat the eggs and mix them with the yogurt
  3. mix in the flour and the rest of the ingredients then knead or use a mixer or by hand
  4. let rise 1 hour
  5. punch down the shape into a round, and let rise again for 25 minutes
  6. oil spray and preheat a gridded panini maker or cast iron skillet
  7. cook for 4 to 5 minutes on each side

Ingredients You Will Need(exact measurements in the recipe card below with instructions


  • flour
  • yogurt
  • beaten egg
  • yeast
  • sugar
  • salt
  • water
  • Optional:
  • granulated garlic powder
  • fresh basil, fresh parsley,
  • oregano

Topping and Suggestions:

  • peppers, onion, artichoke hearts, olives, mushrooms
  • fresh spinach leaves or arugula
  • any kind of bottled jarred pizza sauce
  • make a full meat lovers pizza by adding loose sausage, pepperoni, bacon, or ham
  • use only vine-ripe diced tomatoes for the best results
  • for seafood lovers, shrimp, scallops, or other shellfish
  • use any turkey pepperoni instead of regular
  • ricotta cheese mixed with garlic powder, shredded mozzarella
  • crushed meatballs in sauce
  • leftover steak with caramelized onions, extra sharp cheddar
  • any kind of assorted cheese can be used that melt easily
  • leftover pasta filled the bread top with more marinara and cheese
  • cooked ground beef drained, crispy cooked bacon, cheddar cheese, chopped tomatoes, tomato sauce
  • cooked breaded chicken, alfredo jarred sauce, and swiss cheese
  • leftover rotisserie chicken use hot sauce, not tomato sauce, crispy bacon, top with cheddar cheese
  • any other herbs you prefer
  • any other chopped vegetables
  • mix and match cheeses
  • use flatbread for sandwiches
  • flatbread can be toasted 
  • flatbread can be used as a pizza shell

Before topping the flatbread I prefer a crispier pizza so I toast or bake the flatbread for a few minutes before adding the topping as suggested.


Flatbread is great for sandwiches, toasted for breakfast, or just the way it is slathered in butter warm right after grilling.

Italian Flatbread Recipe with Garlic

Homemade Flat Bread is easy to make and perfect for sandwiches and even pizza!

Ingredients

  • 1 package of dry active yeast
  • 1 cup warm water
  • 4 cups regular all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup sugar plus a pinch more
  • 3 tablespoons of plain yogurt
  • 1 egg beaten
  • 2 teaspoons of plain table salt
  • Optional: 2 teaspoons mixed dried basil, oregano, and parsley, and before grilling sprinkle the top with granulated garlic powder
  • cooking oil spray or melted butter

Instructions

  1. Place 1 cup of the warm water in a small bowl with a pinch of sugar and dissolve the yeast for 10 minutes stirring to blend evenly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl add the egg and yogurt and blend together
  3. Add the yeast mixture to the egg mixture then slowly add the flour sugar and salt
  4. Note: add herbs to this step if using.
  5. I then use the dough attachment on my mixer and let it knead for around 6 minutes.
  6. Cover and let rise for around 1 hour then deflate the dough.
  7. Take around 10 pieces of dough and roll them into balls then place on an oil-sprayed cooked sheet, and cover for 25 minutes.
  8. Cooking Appliance to use:
  9. Heat and oil spray a gridded cast iron skillet (for stovetop usage), a panini maker, or an electric gridded grill ( I have even used a waffle maker in a pinch).
  10. Roll out the balls to around 1/4 inch in thickness and around a 5 to 6-inch circle.
  11. Place rounds on an oil-sprayed or buttered heated grill (or whatever you're using) and grill each side for around 4 to 5 minutes.
  12. Note: sprinkle each round with granulated garlic powder if using.
  13. Remove using tongs and let cool on a wire rack.
